A Universal Search

 Religion has done so much to divide us, it becomes difficult for me to want to follow the suggestion Bill makes on page 87 of the Big Book: “Be quick to see where religious people are right. Make use of what they offer.”

But okay. In learning to humble myself and my thoughts, I don’t need to react so negatively to those who feel that theirs is the ‘only way’: I give myself permission to try on different opinions, and see which ones are a good fit. I allow myself to discard what no longer applies to my emotional and spiritual growth and understanding. When I pray, it is primarily to say ‘thank you’ or ‘what now?’, and when I meditate, I explore hits of thought.

I utilize my background and experience to find a Truth to which I can relate. That is everyone’s right. I acknowledge that we are all on this human journey and make sense of it in ways that speak to us as individuals. I find nuggets of wisdom in all spiritual paths, and it is my intention to honor that which supports a higher connection, no matter what that looks like.

I am grateful for the positive which has come about from religious experiences, and I’m committed to that search for an inclusive Love.

The End…?

 I started writing my daily reflections in January, although I didn’t start posting them until February. It’s been a journey of self-discipline, even as I missed a few days. It’s also been a dive into a creative outlet, one which I plan to build on.  I don’t know yet what I’ll focus on in the New Year, but I know that, for me, daily writing has been a joyful experience. Serenity After the Storm

 Kindness, gratitude, love - all the positive emotions I wish to feel must be embodied. They take root in the depths, and emerge after being patiently tended. They show up from the inside out, not just on the surface. This is what struck me today as I went out into the world resolved to show kindness rather than the impatience I wrote about yesterday. I realized that the kindness I wish to show others MUST be unconditional, and that I had started to see it as a transactional thing. I wish to be surprised by kindness, not making expectations of receiving any. My aim is to feel that kindness toward others, knowing that I can’t possibly know what is happening in their worlds. When it is honestly felt, it will manifest in my actions, and probably on my face. I told my sponsor about my negative experience with myself, and remarked that I knew I looked like I’d just sucked a lemon. A List of Blessings

 Back when I was a Victim, I would have no trouble listing my pain and anguish, my trials and tribulations, and all the ways life wasn’t fair. I was adept at noticing all that was wrong, because it was all I saw, the only parts of life I spent time with. Fault-finding was my passion, my permanent hobby. It became the quicksand holding me in the same stuck place. Practicing gratitude has not only pulled me out of the muck, it has given me wings to gently glide above, beyond, and through. It has given me a new perspective and moments of pure grace. In this moment, I listen through my open balcony door to the sounds of the laughter of friends getting together. I hear the curious clicking of the hummingbirds as they announce their territory. I sit in an apartment which has all I need and more.
